General Charger Type Information

LEVEL 1 EV CHARGERS

Level 1 EV chargers sometimes known as a “granny charger” quite often come with the vehicle and are designed to be portable and kept in the car. They run on a typical 120 Volt AC household outlets and don’t usually require any type of electrical upgrades whatsoever. Their advantage is portability, the drawback is that they are slow, a typical EV will take 20 to 60+ hrs to fully charge a depleted battery. They work adequately well if you drive 10 to 30 kilometers per day and can top up a battery overnight.

LEVEL 2 EV CHARGERS

Level 2 EV chargers utilize a 240 volt AC circuit and can be hardwired or can be of a plug in type of connection. Where a Level 1 EV charger can take up 20 to 60+ hours the Level 2 units can fully charge the same battery in 3.5 to 10 hours typically.

Homeowners and businesses will often install Level 2 chargers because of the rapid charging benefits and because they don’t usually require significant changes to your electrical system. Tax credits and rebates are often available to help offset the costs of installing Level 2 charging stations.

CleanBC EV Charger Rebate

BC Hydro and the CleanBC program offer rebates toward the cost of home EV charger installation. Eligibility and amounts can change, so the best way to confirm what’s currently available is to ask us when you request a quote. We’re familiar with the application process and can walk you through what documentation is required. A rebate won’t cover the full cost, but it takes a real portion off the top. Check our CleanBC rebates page for details.

WALL BOX PULSAR PLUS HOME CHARGING STATIONS

The Wall Box Pulsar Plus is one of the most compact Level 2 home chargers on the market. Despite its small footprint it delivers up to 48 amps of charging power, bringing most EV batteries from near-empty to full in 3 to 8 hours depending on the vehicle. It connects to the Wall Box app, letting you monitor energy usage, schedule charging during off-peak hours, and set charge limits from your phone. Both indoor and outdoor rated, with a Type 2 connector and a 5-metre cable. A reliable choice for homeowners who want smart features without a complicated setup.

Wall Box Pulsar Plus 48 amp

The 48-amp version of the Pulsar Plus delivers the maximum charge rate available to most residential panels — approximately 11.5 kW. For EV owners who drive longer distances daily or want the fastest possible overnight top-up, this is the unit to specify. It carries the same compact design and app connectivity as the standard Pulsar Plus. We’ll confirm your panel’s available capacity before recommending this unit to make sure the installation goes in cleanly without requiring a full service upgrade.

SIEMENS VERSICHARGER G3 HOME CHARGING STATION

The Siemens VersiCharge G3 is a straightforward, contractor-grade Level 2 charger built for dependable daily use. It operates at 30 amps, suits most residential panel configurations without modification, and works with any J1772-compatible electric vehicle. A good choice when the priority is a quality, low-maintenance unit at a reasonable price point. Available in hardwired and plug-in configurations.

SIEMENS Smart VERSICHARGER G3 HOME CHARGING STATION

The Smart VersiCharge G3 adds Wi-Fi connectivity and energy management to the base G3 platform. You can monitor charging sessions, set schedules, and track energy consumption through the Siemens app. It also supports demand response programs — useful if BC Hydro’s time-of-use pricing applies to your home. Same reliable hardware as the standard G3 with the added flexibility of connected charging.

We’re proud to play a role in the transition to a more environmentally friendly means of day to day transportation here in the Capital Region. One that will ensure a better quality of life in the future for both our children and yours and the future generations to come.

EV Energy Management Systems

An EVEMS system can control the load capacity of an EV charger, in turn allowing the maximum charging speed that won’t overload your current electrical system. This is an excellent option for homes and condos where there isn’t enough ampacity with the current electrical panel to install an EV charging station, allowing for a less expensive and easier solution than a full-service upgrade.

What Victoria Homeowners Are Asking About EV Charger Installation

What is the difference between a Level 1 and Level 2 EV charger, and which one do I actually need at home?

A Level 1 charger runs on a standard 120-volt outlet and adds roughly 10 to 15 kilometres of range per hour. A depleted battery can take up to 60 hours to fully charge at that rate. A Level 2 charger runs on 240 volts and charges most EVs overnight, making it the practical choice for anyone driving daily.

For most homeowners, hardwired is the better long-term choice. Hardwired chargers connect directly to the panel and handle Victoria’s wet climate more reliably than plug-in units. Plug-in chargers make sense if you are renting or plan to move, but if you own your home, hardwired is the stronger setup.

Not always, but it depends on your panel’s available capacity. Lenius & Osborn assess your panel load before recommending a unit or beginning any work, so you will know upfront whether your current setup can accommodate a Level 2 charger as-is or whether an upgrade is part of the job. Many Victoria homes, particularly older ones, can handle a Level 2 install without a full service upgrade.

An EV Energy Management System, or EVEMS, is often the answer. It monitors your home’s total electrical load and adjusts the charger’s output in real time so the combined demand never exceeds what your panel can safely handle. Lenius & Osborn offer EVEMS installations as a solution for homes and condos where panel capacity is the limiting factor.

Yes, a permit is required for most Level 2 EV charger installations in BC, and it is pulled through Technical Safety BC. The work must be performed by a licensed electrician and the installation is inspected before sign-off. Lenius & Osborn handle the permit process as part of every installation, so you do not need to manage that separately.

Most Level 2 chargers use the J1772 connector, which is compatible with the vast majority of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles sold in North America. The industry is transitioning toward NACS, the North American Charging Standard, and many newer EVs now use that connector instead of J1772. Before recommending a unit, Lenius & Osborn confirm compatibility with your specific vehicle.

Yes, though it involves a few more steps than a single-family home installation. In BC, strata corporations can approve EV charging installations with a simple majority vote following changes to the Strata Property Act in 2023, which removed a significant barrier for many condo owners. An EVEMS is often part of the solution in multi-unit buildings where shared electrical capacity needs to be managed across multiple chargers.

Yes, rebates are currently available through the CleanBC Go Electric program for eligible Level 2 charger installations at single-family homes, condos, and stratas in BC. The amounts and eligibility requirements can change, and the CleanBC page on the Lenius & Osborn website has current details. When you request a quote, the team can walk you through what documentation is required and whether your installation qualifies.

The most important factors are your vehicle’s maximum onboard charging rate, your panel’s available capacity, and whether you want smart features such as scheduling, energy monitoring, or app control. Getting those three things right before choosing a unit saves you from buying more charger than your panel can support or less than your vehicle can actually use. Lenius & Osborn supply and install units from FLO, WallBox, and Siemens, and will assess your setup before making a recommendation.

Yes, Greater Victoria is the core of where Lenius & Osborn work, and that includes Oak Bay, Saanich, and the wider Capital Region. EV charger installation is one of the fastest-growing parts of what the team does across the region, covering single-family homes, condos, and commercial properties throughout the area.
