If you’ve noticed flickering lights, circuit breakers that trip regularly, or you’re running extension cords to reach outlets that can’t handle the load, your panel is telling you something. The older homes in Victoria BC, Oak Bay, Saanich, and Esquimalt were wired for a fraction of what a modern household demands. EV chargers, heat pumps, home offices, and additional appliances have pushed many original panels well past their designed capacity.
When a circuit is overloaded and the breaker fails to trip, the wiring overheats. That’s a fire risk, not just an inconvenience. The panel is responsible for protecting your home from exactly that situation: overloading, short-circuits, and voltage spikes. When it can no longer do that job reliably, it’s time to replace it.
Lenius & Osborn has been handling panel upgrades, circuit breaker installation, and full service upgrades for Greater Victoria homeowners since 1991. We pull permits, coordinate with BC Hydro on meter and service connections, and leave the job clean and code-compliant.
The electrical panel in your home not only keeps your home supplied with electricity, but it is also responsible for protecting against overloading, short-circuits and more.
Electrical Panel Upgrades
Older homes in Victoria were designed to operate using only a few circuits and 30 to 70 amp 240 volt services for the entire home. Modern homes and appliances require far more complex electrical circuits. Residential services range from 100 to 400 amp 240 volt. If your home or business still has an old fashioned panel with fuses, then you should consider upgrading to a new electrical panel with circuit breakers. If you are considering selling your home, the insurance underwriters in Canada will not accept anything less than a 100AMP service. There are conversion kits available for some types.
Today’s modern electrical panels offer increased convenience and far greater safety than outdated fuse panels with extra protection incorporated in the form of circuit breakers. This allows for the installation of GFCI (Ground-fault), AFCI (Arc-fault) Protection and Surge Protection of the entire panel, offering the absolute best in safety, security and peace of mind.
If you are planning some home improvements, consider the additional power you will need. EV charging, HVAC systems, standby generators, additions/renovations, kitchen/bathroom renos, double ovens and hot tubs may necessitate a larger electrical panel with more circuitry space and ampacity.
Do I need to replace my existing panel?
Some signs to look for when inspecting an old electrical service panel are:
- Wire corrosion
- Insurance Companies require a minimum of 100Amp service
- Lights that flicker
- 1/2 the stove not working
- Hot water tank and dryer issues
- Outlets and switches that stop working
- Burnt or bad connectors, sparks, and/or fire damage
- Not enough ampacity for additional load
Why upgrade your electrical panel?
- Reduce the chance of an electrical fire occurring
- Eliminate any doubled-up circuits
- Add capacity for additional circuits in the future
- Increase ampacity up to 100, 200 or 400amp
- Increase the resale value of your home
Electrical Service Upgrades
An electrical service upgrade is required by the Canadian Electrical Code when the ampacity of your home’s existing electrical service doesn’t have the capacity available to handle the demand of today’s appliances and lifestyle. A service upgrade may include upgrading your homes’ electric panel, meter socket, the cable between the meter and the panel, the cable between the utility and the meter, and the grounding/bonding system.
A service upgrade often includes circuit breaker panel replacement at the same time. It makes sense to do both while the work is open rather than return for a second job.
If you are upgrading your home’s electrical service to 100, 200 or 400amp service, the CleanBC Better Homes & Home Renovation Rebate Program has rebates that may be available to you to help defer some of the costs involved. The specialists at Lenius & Osborn Electric Ltd. can guide you through this process and help determine your eligibility for the various rebates.
